The annual Eurasian adventure is a YPT institution. Ten years ago, the YPT team came up with the seemingly crazy idea of traversing two continents, the entire Eastern Bloc and the entire former Yugoslavia in a limited amount of time. A decade later, it remains true to its roots and is one of our most popular tours for those who live and breathe off the beaten path adventure travel.
In five weeks you’ll cross through 21 countries, 19 languages, 1 rebel republic and frozen conflict zone, 1 nuclear exclusion zone and 17 currencies. This is the adventure of a lifetime that you will not forget! As with all of our tours, you can join the whole thing, or pop in and out and join any section as you please.
Beginning in the capital of China, the Eurasian adventure heads west on one of the longest train journeys on earth, traversing the steppes of Mongolia and Siberia before arriving in the former heart of the Soviet Union: Moscow, where we will pay a visit to the embalmed godfather of communism, Vladimir Lenin. We then take advantage of the new visa-free entry into what has been called one of Europe’s last dictatorships and one of the last corners of the USSR: Belarus. Here we’ll indulge in Soviet nostalgia and take part in military tourism at the infamous Stalin Line.
We then enter Ukraine, one of the largest countries in Europe where we will explore Kiev and Odessa, begin an expedition into the Chernobyl nuclear exclusion zone as well as explore a Soviet nuclear missile base. From Ukraine, we cross through the smuggling territory and into the breakaway state of Transnistria, which tore away from Moldova in a vicious civil war. Today it remains a murky Soviet time warp. From there we enter Europe’s least visited country of Moldova and then board a DDR-era train into the crazy former communist land of Romania. We’ll then head into the ‘Silicon Valley of the Eastern Bloc’, Bulgaria, which will lead us into the Balkan peninsula.
Once in Macedonia, our tour will begin to traverse the length of the former Yugoslavia through the often recently war-torn countries of Kosovo, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Croatia as well as the former communist hermit kingdom of Albania! As we leave the Balkans, our tour begins to cross through the countries of the Warsaw Pact, taking in their communist remnants as well as the delights of countries reborn under the liberation they found after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
This is the ultimate YPT tour; only true Pioneers need apply!
