Party Foundation Day & Mount Kumgang Tour With Mass Games
Join our Mount Kumgang adventure tour to the DPRK whilst the national celebrates their Party Foundation Day with mass dancing, possible fireworks and viewing the spectacular Mass Games. This festival marks the founding of the Workers’ Party of Korea back in 1945 soon after World War II and is recognized as one of the more special national holidays to take place.
During your tour with us in Pyongyang, you will see all the must-see sights of the capital such as the Mausoleum where both Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il lay in state, explore Kim Il Sung Square, adventure down into the deep Pyongyang Metro, view Juche tower for a perfect panorama view, visit the Korean War Museum and much more. We’ve also arranged an overnight stay at Kaesong city, located only 8km away from the DMZ so you can have an up-close and personal visit to Panmunjom Village where we’ll have our own Korean People’s Army military officer for a detailed tour and history lesson of the site.
After seeing what the west side of the Korean Peninsula coast has to offer, we’ll then take you over to the east side to the famous Mt. Kumgang region and the sunny coast of Wonsan city. You’ll first arrive in Wonsan, which is a popular holiday destination for Koreans all over the DPRK. Here we’ll try the very delicious and seriously fresh seafood caught along the pier and to spend a special afternoon kicking a football around, playing frisbee and swimming with the locals.
The following day we’ll head further down to Mt. Kumgang and hike Kuryong falls and scout the gorgeous Samil Lagoon. With the Autumn season in full effect, Mt. Kumgang is particularly stunning during this time of the year featuring vivid and multi-coloured green, orange, red, brown, purple foliage. During our two evenings in this incredibly scenic region, we’ll spend the night at a lesser-visited hotel and traverse everything this region has to offer before heading back to Pyongyang and concluding the tour in Beijing.
The Mass Games, the world’s largest performance with over 100,000 performers is expected to take place during this tour! Now is your chance to watch this grand spectacular performance. Tickets are on-top of tour cost and is paid in cash during your tour in Pyongyang. We highly recommend securing your spot on tour early as we expect spaces to fill up very quickly.

Meet your YPT guide at 1:30pm at the Beijing Zhong Gu Hotel near Beijing Railway Station found here. During this meeting, we’ll go through the tour’s itinerary, receive DPRK visas and tickets, as well as a great chance to meet your fellow travellers and to discuss any other questions you may have about the DPRK.
Train takers depart Beijing Central station at 5:25pm for the 24 hour sleeper ride to Pyongyang.
Friday 7th October
Train group arrive at Dandong at 7:00am for Chinese border control then depart for Sinuiju at 10:30am for the extensive border control from the DPRK side
Flight takers depart Beijing Airport Terminal 2 on Air Koryo at 12:00pm (meet the group at Air Koryo check in counter).
Flight group arrive in Pyongyang at 3:00pm to a warm welcome from your Korean guides.
Train group arrive at 6:45pm to an equally warm welcome.
Dinner at a local Korean restaurant on Ryomyong Street.
Check in and overnight at the Sosan Hotel.
In the evening your YPT guide will show you around the hotel before taking you for drinks and to get to know your Korean guides.
Saturday 8th October
Walkthrough Mansudae fountain park and see the mosaic pictures of President Kim Il Sung and the leader Kim Jong Il.
Visit Mansudae Grand Monument – the two large bronze statues of President Kim Il Sung and Leader Kim Jong Il overlooking the city (optional extra- you can present flowers if you wish: 40RMB or 5 euros).
Foreign Language Bookshop – with a large selection of books in English and other European Languages as well as other souvenirs followed by a short walk to:
Kim Il Sung Square the central square of Pyongyang city and the place where all the action happens.
Visit the Grand People’s Study House – the country’s largest library and adult education centre with spectacular views over Kim Il Sung Square
Lunch at a local restaurant to try the famous Pyongyang cold noodles or Korean Bibimbap with a special performance from the waitresses
Korean War Museum – Let the expert local guide show you around the enormous museum featuring dioramas, locally used weapons, tanks etc, and captured American equipment!
USS Pueblo – The only US Naval Ship still held captive by another nation.
Juche Tower – Monument to the everlasting Juche Ideology (optional 40RMB or 5 euros to go to the top).
Party Foundation Monument – this monument marks the 50th anniversary of the Worker’s Party of Korea built in 1995
Visit Kwangbok Department Store – here is where most of the middle class in Pyongyang shop for local goods. It’s also our chance to obtain local DPRKorean Won!

Sunday 9th October
Kumsusan Palace of the Sun – The mausoleum for the Great Leader President Kim Il Sung and the Dear Leader Kim Jong Il.
Revolutionary Martyr’s Cemetery – The resting place of the greatest of the anti-Japanese revolutionary fighters, each grave features a bronze bust of the hero laid to rest within.
Lunch at New Hope Restaurant
Pyongyang Metro – ride 5 stops on the famous Pyongyang Underground!
Exiting at the Arch of Triumph – the largest Victory Arch in the world, built to celebrate the triumphant return of Kim Il Sung after the Anti-Japanese war.
Drive to Kaesong city (2 hours) – this former ancient capital is only a stone’s throw away from the DMZ separating the North from South Korea.
On the drive down we’ll stop for a photo opportunity of the Monument to the Three Charters of National Reunification, standing over the Reunification Highway.
Visit Sariwon city – the capital of North Hwanghae province. Explore the folklore park and view the city from the mountain top pagoda. You can also try locally brewed Makkoli in a local bar.
Arrive in Kaesong and check into Korean Folklore Hotel – this traditional style hotel is located in the heart of Kaesong’s old city which dates back to the Ri Dynasty. Guests sleep on the heated floor on a Korean style bedding. Each room is adjoined to a peaceful courtyard with a stream separating the homes to the restaurant where we’ll dine for this evening.
Take an evening stroll through the old city to the South Gate of the old citadel.
Dinner at the hotel served with Korean Pansangi set meal – a series of dishes served in bronze bowls.
Overnight in Kaesong
Monday 10th October – Party Foundation Day
Visit Panmunjom DMZ Village – see the DMZ and the treaty and conferences rooms where the armistice was signed all in the company of a friendly KPA officer guide (You can also take pictures of soldiers here!)
Koryo Museum- the oldest university in Korea and now a converted museum of local history. Also the site of the best propaganda and stamp/postcard shop in the DPRK!
Korean lunch at the Thongil Restaurant in Kaesong – Optional extras – Dog soup for 5 euro or 40 RMB or Ginseng Stuffed Whole Chicken 30 euro – can be split between several).
Walk up to Jannam Hill for a spectacular view over old Kaesong town
Drive back to Pyongyang
Special celebratory events (optional: 150RMB or 20 euros) – Yet to be confirmed but we will take part in any events that are possible for tourists to attend. These may include a circus performance, red orchestra, or possibly some other surprises.
Walk up along Moran Hill located in the heart of Pyongyang. Here the locals visit the park to celebrate today with their families and friends with BBQ, dancing, singing and drinking. Fantastic opportunity to soak up the atmosphere.
Participate at Mass Dance ceremony held at the monument. A fantastic unique photo opportunity! Also don’t be shy to jump in and dance with the locals!

Spectate the Mass Games – The world’s largest performance. Tickets can be purchased with cash only and reserved whilst on tour in North Korea.

Tuesday 11th October
Breakfast in Pyongyang and drive to Wonsan city (4 hours) stopping at Sinpyong Lagoon along the way for a quick rest and refreshments
Picnic lunch at Ulim Waterfall – one of the most famous and beautiful waterfalls in the DPRK
Arrive in Wonsan, check into Songdowon hotel overlooking Wonsan Bay
Trip highlight – Visit Wonsan Beach for a swim, sunbathe, or to play beach games with the locals (optional BBQ on the beach available 40RMB or 5 euros per person)
Walk along the pier to Chok Islet where the locals will be fishing, drinking and enjoying their own BBQs with friends and family. Here you have the option of trying the fresh catch of the day for 40RMB or 5 euros, this will give you a good mix of everything
Dinner at a nearby famous seafood restaurant along the waterfront
Overnight at Songdowon Hotel
Wednesday 12th October
Head further south towards the DMZ to Mt. Kumgang (2 hours).
Stop at Samil Lagoon for refreshments and breathtaking photos.
Lunch at Tanpung Restaurant.
Check in to the Outer Kumgang Hotel – this hotel was renovated by South Koreans with spectacular views of the Mt. Kumgang ranges.
Hike to Kuryong falls and Sanpil Ponds – the most famous scenic place in the Mt. Kumgang region with absolutely stunning and surreal views of multi-coloured autumnal leaves and crystal-clear rock pools.

Thursday 13th October

Kumgangsan Revolutionary History Museum – A museum dedicated to the Anti-Japanese struggle in this region of the DPRK.
Sea Kumgang – An area famous for its beautiful lagoons and spectacular beaches. This area is also located inside the Korean DMZ giving us a chance to visit another area of the DMZ where very few tourists make it.
Scenic picnic lunch on the shores of Kumgang beach.
Head into Inner Kumgang and visit Podok Hermitage – built in 1675 during the Li dynasty and one of the very few temples still maintained by monks in the DPRK
View Myogil-sang Statue – the largest Buddhist image in Korea carved out of a cliffside during the Koryo dynasty
Explore Phyohun Temple – built in 670 and originally named Sinrim Temple, it’s famous for being one of four temples constructed in the Mt. Kumgang region. It was constructed alongside 20 other structures on the temple grounds but were destroyed during the Korean War. The temple stands in its original state.
Stop by Mt. Kumgang Natural Spa – here you can get a deep massage or soak up the natural spring water – optional cost.

Friday 14th October

Drive to Sijung Beach for a dip and sunshine – a beautiful tranquil beach located between Mt. Kumgang and Wonsan. Historically this beach was a famous retreat for the royal members during the Ri dynasty.
Drive back to Wonsan
Lunch in Wonsan local restaurant
Continue drive back to Pyongyang
Visit Meari Shooting Range – this shooting range has recently been renovated to include indoor shooting with pistols, rifles or archery! 50 US cents per bullet.
Stop by the Mansugyo Beer Bar for some refreshments with the locals.

Saturday 15th October
Flight members depart at 8:50am for Beijing on Air Koryo. (Arriving at 9:50am Beijing time).
Train members depart at 10:25am for Beijing on train K28.

Train members arrive in Beijing Railway Station at 9:00am.
