Turkey removes visa requirement for Australians today, on April 17, 2026.
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced that as of Friday, holders of ordinary Australian passports will be permitted to travel to Turkey visa-free for tourism and transit for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Previously, Australians were required to obtain a tourism Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) online before entering Turkey.
While the process was a simple online ETA, the cost, including service fees, was $67.95 USD. Australia joins other nations such as America, European Union, Japan, China, and Korea as well as other nations that have previously established visa-free travel to Turkey.
The announcement that Turkey removes visa requirement for Australians has been warmly welcomes, especailly is it was announced a week before ANZAC day, a pivotal day in the history of relations between Australia and Turkey, as ANZAC day marks the battle of Gallipoli in which many Australian and New Zealand armed forces were killed by Ottoman soldiers when attempting to reach the Gallipoli cliffs by sea. Yearly, thousands of Australians and New Zealanders travel to Turkey to commemorate these events.
This announcement is not reciprocal, and Turkish citizens traveling to Australia are still required to obtain a visa.
