We are once again delighted to be taking guests to the Goroka Festival one of the most important festivals in Papua New Guinea, but which will hold extra importance in 2025 as it coincides with the 50th birthday of the nation.
Our trip begins with us starting in Port Moresby on national day with us attending the flag raising ceremony at 10 am on the 16th, before taking part in the rest of the celebrations of the day which will include a huge fireworks display attended by King Charles among others. And no worries if you arrive later in the day, as we will run two departures from the hotel.
After this epic day we will then head to Mount Hagen one of the most beautiful and important areas of Papua New Guinea. This is the home of our local partners, where you’ll have the opportunity to meet and mingle with their tribe for the day, inclusive of face-paintings, dancing and the spectacular traditional mumu feast.
We then take the truly scenic drive down to Goroka home of the Mudmen for the Goroka festival. While now tourist orientated their origins are much more interesting. Originally these festivals were set up to help avoid war between the various tribes of the country (which to an extent they still do). Many of the tribes we meet were still living traditionally until the 1970’s, so you will meet some genuine warriors.
This is also a chance for the people of the various different tribes to forego their slightly more modern lifestyles and really embrace their heritage through preserving their traditional clothes and cultural deeds.
The entire event lasts for two days and we will see it from start to finish, with lots of unique opportunities for mingling with locals. Following the tour, you will either return to Port Moresby, or join us for our Group B extension.
Our Group B option takes us on a drive deep into rural Papua New Guinea from Lae in order to see the smoked mummies of Aseki. It features 14 corpses on bamboo scaffolding in life like positions. A truly macabre site, but also one that is seen by very few foreigners.
As with all of our tours to Papua New Guinea we expect the Goroka Festival to fill up fast, so book your place now to ensure seeing this amazing spectacle.
