We are once again delighted to be taking guests to the Goroka Festival, one of the most vibrant and significant cultural celebrations held in Papua New Guinea.
Your tour with us begins in the capital, Port Moresby, where you’ll meet your YPT guide and fellow travellers. We’ll start with a city tour of one of the world’s most dangerous capitals before wrapping up the day with dinner at the Yacht Club.
We’ll then make our way to Mount Hagen, one of the most beautiful and culturally significant regions of Papua New Guinea. This is the home of our local partners, where you’ll spend the day meeting and mingling with their tribe and others. The experience includes traditional face-painting, dancing, and the highlight of the day – a spectacular mumu feast.
We’ll then take the scenic drive down to Goroka, home of the legendary Mudmen, for the Goroka Festival. While the festival today is more tourist-oriented, its origins are far more fascinating. It was originally created as a way to prevent conflict between the many tribes of Papua New Guinea, a role it still plays to some extent.
Many of the tribes you’ll encounter lived in traditional ways until as recently as the 1970s, making this a rare opportunity to meet genuine warriors and experience their culture firsthand. The festival also allows people from different tribes to step away from modern routines and proudly embrace their heritage, showcasing traditional dress, rituals, and performances.
The festival runs over two full days, and we’ll be there from start to finish, giving you plenty of chances to mingle with locals and immerse yourself in the celebrations. After the tour, you’ll either return to Port Moresby or continue with us on our Group B extension.
Our Group B option takes us on a journey deep into rural Papua New Guinea, from Lae to the remote village of Aseki, where you’ll witness the famous smoked mummies of Aseki. Here, 14 preserved corpses rest on bamboo scaffolding, arranged in life-like positions. A truly macabre sight, yet one that offers a rare glimpse into an ancient tradition seen by very few outsiders.
