Once known as French Somalia, Djibouti may be small in size, but it delivers some of the most surreal and otherworldly landscapes on the African continent. With its bubbling sulphur lakes, lunar-like terrain, and dramatic desertscapes, this is a country where you’ll often feel like you’ve landed on another planet.
Our tour takes you to Djibouti’s two most iconic highlights – Lake Assal, the lowest point in Africa and one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world, and Lake Abbe, famous for its haunting limestone chimneys and roaming flamingos. Along the way, we’ll also explore the Bara Desert, volcanic craters, geothermal hot springs, and encounter the unique natural beauty and wildlife that define this hidden gem of the Horn of Africa.
Despite its size, Djibouti plays a big role on the global stage. Strategically located at the crossroads of Africa and the Middle East, it hosts military bases from the US, France, China, and others – making it a fascinating place not just for adventurers, but also for those interested in geopolitics and modern history.
Djibouti is also one of the trickier smaller nations to visit, which makes it all the more rewarding. You can join this trip as a standalone tour, or combine it with our Horn of Africa Mega Combo Tour, which continues on to Somaliland, Eritrea, and even Somalia – perfect for hardcore travellers and country collectors alike.
