Syria Travel Update: Opposition Forces Advancement Timeline

8th December 2024: The opposition forces have announced complete control over Damascus. Rebels’ Military Operations Department have broadcast a statement announcing the end of Assad’s rule from the Radio and Television Building in Damascus, the capital of Syria. Now will be an era of transition and the plans of what is to come have not been officially shared.

6th December 2024: The rebels have claimed victory over the central city of Hama, Syria’s 5th largest city after a day of fighting with Syrian Government forces. Syrian Government forces have been ordered to retreat.

1st December 2024: Syrian Government forces and their allies have begun retaliation strikes in Aleppo and Idlib and have attempted to regain territory lost to the rebels in centra Syria, including the Hama province. Regional leaders have begun releasing statements on the situation in Syria and many bilateral meetings are taking place between leaders from Syria, Turkey, Iran, UAE and more.

30th November 2024: The Syrian Opposition Factions have claimed control over suburbs and infrastructure deep in the heart of Aleppo including the Aleppo Citadel, the Municipality Building and the centrally located Police headquarters. Government forces have withdrawn from Aleppo, including from the Aleppo International Airport. The Syrian Opposition Factions are expanding to other villages in the Idlib province as well as East of Aleppo in areas south of Al-Bab, Russian airstrikes have allegedly continued in the Western Suburbs of Aleppo and the Syrian Democratic Forces have deployed troops in the North and Eastern suburbs of Aleppo in response to the governments withdrawal.

At approximately 8:20pm local time, opposition groups have claimed to have taken control of Hama, Syrias fifth biggest city located centrally in the country.

29th November 2024: Over the last days, starting from November 27th Syrian Opposition factions active in the Idlib province of Syria have made advancements towards the second largest city in Syria – Aleppo.

Only moments ago, rebels from the group have claimed they have breached the city of Aleppo by reportedly entering the area of New Aleppo and other Western suburbs. Our local team have reported the sound of bullets and missiles with reports claiming Russian airstrikes are currently being conducted in Aleppo, however this is yet to be confirmed. There were further reports that two separate incidents of car bombings on Friday November 29.

Over the last few days, rebels have taken control over small villages in the province of Aleppo, as well as Base 46, the largest military base in Western Aleppo. The Syrian Opposition factions have been clashing with government forces which has left over 180 (mainly combatants) dead and hundreds of civilian families displaced.

Rebel forces were active in Aleppo during the Syrian civil war, however this is the first breach of the city since government forces expelled the rebels in 2016. Ever since then, different Syrian Opposition factions have been active in the province of Idlib which is one of the few remaining territories not under control of the Syrian government or pro government forces.
