Join us on our Communist Albania Tour as we explore one of the least-visited countries in Europe, focusing on the reign of Enver Hoxha in the former People’s Socialist Republic of Albania.
Renowned for its hospitable culture, delicious cuisine, and picturesque scenery, Albania offers a unique glimpse into its complex past. On this tour, we’ll delve deep into the historical accounts of Albania’s communist era, visiting forgotten historical sites and hearing firsthand stories about life under Hoxha.
Enver Hoxha led the partisan movement against the fascist Italian occupation during WWII. After Albania’s liberation, he became the country’s head of state. The nation was left in ruins after the war, but under his leadership, Albania made significant progress, such as increasing literacy rates, providing free healthcare, and developing infrastructure, while aiming for self-reliance. However, these advancements were achieved through brutal tactics against his critics.
Your journey begins in Tirana, Albania’s capital. Here, we’ll explore the shocking history of Hoxha’s regime, one of the most brutal, secretive, and isolationist during the Cold War era.
Hoxha’s paranoia grew under his one-party rule following WWII. Fearing invasion, he devised a strategy for guerrilla warfare, leading to the construction of thousands of bunkers – a defining feature of his legacy. Throughout the tour, we’ll visit and explore many of these bunkers and underground cities, eerie reminders of how resources could have been better used to benefit the Albanian people.
Our journey continues to Shkodra, Albania’s untouristy northern capital. Here, we’ll meet a former member of Albania’s underworld, who is now a tattoo artist who operates from a former bunker. He will share personal accounts of criminal activity and life after the fall of communism.
Next, we’ll head to Kukës on a scenic road trip. In Kukës, we’ll visit Spaç Prison, where we’ll learn about the harrowing treatment of Hoxha’s dissidents, and explore an underground city constructed to withstand potential invasions.
We’ll also visit hidden gems from the communist era, including Soviet statues of Stalin and Lenin, Hoxha’s house, and the Pyramid of Tirana. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to sample some of Albania’s finest cuisine and homemade raki (a traditional alcoholic drink).
