Celebrate Easter with YPT in lands that we know and love, the nuclear wasteland of Chernobyl and unrecognized country of Transnistria as well as in the Autonomous Republic of Nakchivan. Beginning in the vibrant Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, we will venture into the nuclear exclusion zone of Chernobyl, featuring the ghost city of Pripyat. From Kyiv, we head South on a refurbished Soviet night train to the rough port town of Odessa, the crossing point into the unrecognized country of Transnistria, trapped in the style of the Soviet Union since a brutal civil war.
We then hit up the least visited and poorest country in Europe: Moldova! Here we will tour the capital of Chisinau before visiting an underground winery to sample a hearty amount of Moldova’s most well-known export. As we bid farewell to Moldova, we will then board a DDR-era night train to Romania. There, we’ll tour the former playground of the godfather of communism: Nicolae Ceaușescu!
In order to continue with the soviet theme but in a totally different geopolitical context, we’ll board flights to the Caucasus, to Nakchivan Autonomous Republic, travelling first to its metropolis, Baku in Azerbaijan. Inside this little known, landlocked republic are many incredible sights from ancient mosques and Madrassas and Soviet relics to awe inspiring natural scenery and the tomb of Noah. We’ll begin our tour in the capital of Azerbaijan and explore everything it has to offer from it’s Soviet remnants and its ancient history and the cult of personality around the long serving president Heydar Aliyev. We’ll then take a charter flight into Nakhchivan, as the border with Armenia is sealed, and begin our tour around the country seeing everything there is to see, meeting local people and trying the local cuisine.
