by Andy Khong

When it comes to city names, some places have taken a detour from the ordinary and ventured into the realm of hilarity. From the quirky and comical to the downright bizarre, these cities around the world have names that are bound to bring a smile to your face. Join us on a light-hearted journey as we explore some of the funniest city names that have left their mark on the map.

1. Intercourse, Pennsylvania, USA Nestled in the heart of Amish Country, Intercourse’s name draws attention for obvious reasons. This town is, however, far more modest than its name might suggest. Visitors can learn about the Amish way of life, enjoy picturesque landscapes, and, of course, chuckle at the town’s name.

2. Dildo, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada In the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, you’ll find the charming fishing village of Dildo. While the origins of the name are debated, the town has embraced its unique moniker with a sense of humour, even hosting events like the “Dildo Days Festival.”

3. Hell, Norway Located in the idyllic landscapes of Norway, Hell often freezes over, quite literally. The town’s name can lead to some amusing travel anecdotes, like sending postcards with a postmark from Hell or gleefully declaring, “I’ve been to Hell and back!”

4. Boring, Oregon, USA and Dull, Scotland Boring and Dull might seem like an unlikely pairing, but they’ve actually formed an official “sister city” relationship to celebrate their shared uniqueness. While Boring offers a relaxing, scenic escape, Dull boasts a tranquil Scottish charm, proving that there’s more to these places than meets the eye.

5. Zzyzx, California, USA Pronounced as “Zye-zix,” this desert town’s name draws attention not only for its unusual spelling but also for its intriguing history. The name was coined by a radio personality who claimed it was the “last word in the English language.”

6. Chicken, Alaska, USA This remote Alaskan town was named after the local ptarmigan, a bird that the early settlers relied on for sustenance. While the town itself might be small, its name has gained quite the attention, attracting curious travellers and chicken-themed souvenirs.

7. Wetwang, East Yorkshire, England With a name that elicits giggles, Wetwang is a village in England’s East Yorkshire. The name’s origin is believed to be Old Norse, but its humorous connotations make it a favourite among those who appreciate a good pun.

8. Why, Arizona, USA Why, oh why, is there a town called Why? Located in the sun-soaked state of Arizona, this town’s name raises eyebrows and prompts questions, but it also makes for great photo opportunities with the town’s road signs.

9. Looneyville, Texas, USA Step into Looneyville, and you might just find yourself in a world of whimsy. This Texas town embraces its playful name and revels in its eccentric charm, inviting visitors to experience a slice of quirky Americana.

10. Batman, Turkey While not named after the iconic superhero, Batman in Turkey is a city with a rich history and cultural heritage. The mayor once even considered suing Warner Bros. for using the city’s name without permission in the Batman films.

11. Fucking, Austria It’s impossible to discuss funny city names without addressing the elephant in the room – Fucking, Austria. The town’s name, though often causing a chuckle, is derived from a harmless Bavarian term. Fucking is pronounced, “Fook-Ging” in German, but when pronounced in English, it may evoke a reaction; it’s a reminder that language and humour can be wonderfully diverse and context-driven. The city signs were often stolen by souvenir-hunting tourists with the Municipality so fed up, that they finally changed its name in 2021 to, “Fugging”.

Fucking has finally been renamed Fugging – to stop the butt of jokes!

Unforgettable Laughter on the Map

These cities prove that a sense of humour can be found in even the most unexpected corners of the world. While their names might raise eyebrows or evoke laughter, these places offer more than just comical titles.
