With Papua New Guinea now a firm favourite on our annual itineraries, we simply couldn’t resist pushing further into remote Southeast Asia with our very first trip to the Baliem Valley Festival in West Papua.
Saying you’ll be off the beaten track on this journey is a serious understatement. You’ll be trekking through the stunning Baliem Valley, surrounded by pristine villages of the. Dani and other ethnic groups, wandering past terraced fields, dense rainforest, and soaking up a wealth of authentic local culture.
The adventure kicks off in Jayapura, the main city of West Papua, where we dive into the vibrant culinary scene, explore peaceful beaches, take in breathtaking hilltop views, and sail across Lake Sentani to visit a traditional village famous for its ancient bark painting art. Don’t expect to bump into many other travellers here as this part of the world remains wonderfully untouched and intensely rewarding.
But the real highlight is the Baliem Valley Festival itself, a spectacular annual gathering of the Dani, Lani, and Yali tribes. This extraordinary event revolves around the thrilling mock tribal warfare, an electrifying showcase of strength, agility, and age-old battle tactics. Once a vital training ground for village warriors, this ritual has evolved into a powerful symbol of cultural pride, resilience, and unity.
The trip as is starts and finishes in Jayapura, which is reachable from a number of airports. For those wishing to carry on to Papua New Guinea and our Mount Hagen Tour though we offer the chance to travel with overland, with discounts for those combining West Papua, Mount Hagen, as well as Bougainville.
