This May YPT is taking you to the seldom explored islands of Timor and Papua! In true YPT style you will be celebrating Independence Day in East Timor, and with Papua New Guinea now a mainstay of our annual itineraries we just couldn’t resist a further foray into remote SE Asia with our inaugural trip to West Papua!
On this tour we are covering East Timor in-depth, traveling overland from Indonesian West Timor to the East Timorese exclave of Oecusse and its capital Pante Makasar. East Timor, or Timor Leste, declared independence in 1975 when the Portuguese left but was soon invaded and occupied by Indonesia. In 2002 it finally declared full independence and remains Asia’s youngest country.
Via the island of Bali, we will then be heading to West Papua, the Indonesian half of the island of New Guinea. To say you will be getting off the beaten path on this trip is a bit of an understatement. You will be hiking the Baliem Valley through stunning scenery, pristine villages of the ethnic Dani and other groups, with terraced fields and rainforest, and local culture galore.
Expect not to bump into any other travellers in this hard to reach but extremely rewarding part of the world. The full tour is $3695 or starting in Kupang and finishing in Jayapura is $3395.
This tour will only run on a minimum of 4 people.

Is West Papua a country? The short answer to this is that no, West Papua is not a country, but an integral part of Indonesia. Of course the long answer is somewhat more nuanced, as well as being filled with intrigue, misery and a lot of sadness. …
