Top 5 things to do in Nuku’alofa

Nuku’alofa is a city very much in the hearts of the YPT team, not least because we got stranded there after a typhoon this year!

It is also an integral part of our yearly Least Visited Country Tour with us chartering a plane to fly from Apia in Samoa to Nuku’alofa, the capital city of Tonga.

Here’s our guide on the five best things to do with a few days in Nuku’alofa

5) Visit the Royal Tombs

In Tonga, they really like their Royal Family, and there are some excellent tombs that can be visited easily in the centre of the city.

There’s also the Royal Palace that whilst you cannot exactly pop-into, you can drive around it.

4) Bbq on the Beach!

If you manage to get yourself a nice resort on the beach, and there are a few, then one of the best things to do is drink cheap gin, and have a beach party. Be careful where you book, though, not all resorts are created equally.

3) Eating in Nuku’alofa

Nuku’alofa has some fantastic street food that you will see littered around the streets as you drive along. A lot of sweet dishes as well as chicken with tarot. I also discovered the best burger in Nuku’alofa.

2) Surfing in Tonga

Tonga was some great beaches with awe spring waves. I didn’t actually do any surfing, but I did do some wave jumping. If you come at the right time of year, it is also possible to go whale watching in Tonga.

1) Nuku’alofa Blow Holes

We rented a car and headed out to the blowholes of Nuku’alofa, and they shouldn’t need much explanation, it is water that shoots out of blowholes.

And that is our very short guide ton the top 5 things to do with a lazy few days in Nuku’alofa, the capital city of Tonga.

See it for yourself by joining our Least Visited Countries Tour.
