All travellers wanting to go to Sri Lanka must apply for an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization). It is easy to apply for: no passport copies, documents or photographs are required. The cost of a tourist visa for 30 days is $50 for most nations, and $20 for South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries.

Upon arrival, you’ll simply have to show your passport to the immigration officer at the port of entry, along with a return ticket. It is advisable for you to bring a copy of the ETA approval notice along with you.
The best time to visit depends on the specific region and the experiences you're seeking. Generally, the dry season from December to March is popular for beach destinations, while the central highlands are pleasant year-round. The monsoon season in Sri Lanka is from May to August in the southwest and from November to March in the northeast. However, the showers are usually brief and don't disrupt travel plans too much.
As far as crime is concerned, Sri Lanka is generally considered safe for tourists. However, it's recommended to stay informed about the current social and political situation. For much of 2022, there were frequent protests in Sri Lanka as a result of the country's severe economic crisis: it is advised to stay away from such demonstrations.
The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Credit cards are widely accepted in urban areas, but it's advisable to carry cash, especially in more rural or remote locations.
Travelers are advised to check with their healthcare provider for vaccinations and take precautions against mosquito-borne diseases. Common vaccinations include Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and routine vaccinations.
Sri Lanka has a conservative culture, and it's important to dress modestly, particularly when visiting religious sites. It's customary to remove shoes before entering someone's home or a temple. Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon. Avoid excessive hugging or kissing in public spaces. Bargaining is expected at markets and with some tuk-tuk drivers. Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated: a small tip (10%) is customary for good service at restaurants and hotels.
In Sri Lanka, there is WiFi in most hotels, restaurants and cafes. Travellers can also purchase a tourist SIM card at the airport and in most cities for the duration of their tour. Dialog and SLT (Sri Lanka Telecom) offer the best coverage and have pre-paid cards for tourists. For example, Dialog offers a 10 GB plan for 1299 rupees (around $4).
