What is the Nanjiecun Resident Rating System?
Since the 1980s, the Nanjiecun village has resisted market reforms and instead embraced a communal economy. Residents don’t pay rent, receive monthly stipends, and work in village-owned factories or services. Life in Nanjiecun is tightly organised, and that structure extends deeply into social conduct.
The Nanjiecun Resident Rating System is consist of 2 systems of behavioural regulation and moral ranking.
The first one is the Nanjiecun Village Regulations. It is 16 strict rules for all residents.
The second one is the 10-Star Civilised Household Evaluation System. It is a rating system that honours families who excel in ideological, cultural, and moral life.
The Nanjiecun Resident Rating System Part 1: The Nanjiecun Village Regulations
The Nanjiecun Village Regulations outline 16 don’ts, rules that guide every aspect of daily behaviour from political belief to personal hygiene. While some might seem moralistic or ideological, they reflect the values the community aims to uphold.
Below are the Village Regulations.
- Never go against the communist belief. This fundamental principle serves as the ideological cornerstone of the village, guiding the actions and values of every villager.
- Refrain from dereliction of duty, neglect of work, or malfeasance. Villagers are expected to take their jobs seriously and contribute to the development of the village with full dedication.
- Avoid shirking responsibilities, being unjust in handling affairs, or giving poor guidance. Everyone is encouraged to be proactive and just in dealing with village matters.
- Do not seek personal gain at the expense of the public or others, be an Autruist. The emphasis is on the common good, fostering a spirit of selflessness among the villagers.
- Never be picky about jobs or disobey organizational assignments. Villagers are required to be flexible and follow the arrangements made by the village organization for the overall development.
- Resist work slackness and perfunctory attitudes. High – quality work is expected to ensure the smooth operation of various undertakings in the village.
- Avoid deception, undermining unity, or causing division. Honesty and unity are highly valued to maintain a harmonious relationship within the community.
- Do not be passive, backwards, or cause trouble. A positive and progressive attitude is promoted to drive the village forward.
- Refrain from vulgar interests and improper words and deeds. Decency in behavior and speech is emphasized to uphold the moral standards of the village.
- Avoid a dissolute life and behaviour that offends public morals. A healthy and upright lifestyle is advocated for all villagers.
- Never be wasteful, show off, or engage in comparisons. Thrift is considered a virtue, and villagers are encouraged to lead a simple life.
- Do not get drunk and cause trouble, disrupting public order. Maintaining public order is essential for the well – being of the whole village.
- Refrain from destroying the environmental hygiene. The village pays great attention to environmental protection, and every villager is responsible for keeping the village clean.
- Avoid damaging public property. Public property is the common asset of the village, and its protection is the responsibility of everyone.
- Never abandon the elderly or engage in unfilial behaviour. Filial piety is an important traditional virtue that is highly respected in Nanjie Village.
- Do not cover up bad people and bad deeds. Upholding justice and transparency is crucial for the good governance of the village.
The Nanjiecun Resident Rating System Part 2: The 10-Star Civilised Household Evaluation System
While the 16 regulations emphasise what not to do, the 10-Star System is all about what you should do. It’s a structured evaluation of each household’s performance across ten categories. Earning all ten stars is considered a badge of honour, signifying that your family is an ideal contributor to the socialist community
1. Communist Star
Households must show unwavering faith in communism, study Marxism-Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought, and strive to build a small “communist community” in practice. Loyalty to the Party and the collective is non-negotiable.
2. Responsibility Star
Members must be dedicated workers, take their roles seriously, act fairly, and dare to speak out against negative behavior. Everyone is expected to care about village affairs and contribute to daily operations.
3. Contribution Star
This star honors self-sacrifice and service. Families should be ready to endure hardship, help others, and complete at least one good deed per person per month.
4. Culture Star
Families are encouraged to pursue education, attend village events, and foster a love of science, arts, and literature. Lifelong learning is a civic duty.
5. Discipline Star
Household members must obey laws, respect village rules, and refrain from any behavior that damages Nanjie’s reputation, whether online or offline.
6. New Customs Star
This star replaces outdated traditions with progressive values. No feudal or superstitious practices; Simple weddings and funerals with no extravagant ceremonies; No bribery or status games; Gender equality and harmonious family life.
7. Skills Star
At least one family member should possess a practical skill or technical expertise. Knowledge is to be shared, not hoarded. Supporting science and innovation is essential.
8. Thrift Star
Households must live modestly, avoid waste, and reject material comparisons. Frugality is celebrated as a moral virtue and a political ideal.
9. Filial Piety Star
Parents must raise children with integrity and discipline. Adult children must care for their aging parents, ensuring food, medical care, and emotional well-being.
10. Hygiene Star
Families must maintain clean homes and surroundings. This includes no littering or spitting; no raising pets; clean, orderly rooms, kitchens, and balconies; regular participation in neighbourhood sanitation work.
