Ivory Coast rarely makes it onto standard itineraries, which is precisely what makes it worth the effort. This journey explores the country’s history, political ambition, and living traditions, offering a clear sense of how Côte d’Ivoire fits together.
We’ll begin in Grand-Bassam, the former colonial capital. Here, faded administrative buildings, oceanfront streets, and the National Museum provide context to the French presence and the foundations of the modern state. Moving east to Assinie-Mafia, the landscape shifts to a narrow strip between the Atlantic and the Ébrié Lagoon for a more relaxed look at coastal life.
Back in Abidjan, West Africa’s economic powerhouse, we’ll visit the Blockauss neighbourhood, where the city meets the ocean in a direct, unfiltered way.
Heading inland, the scale changes again in Yamoussoukro. Built as a political statement, the city is defined by wide avenues and monumental projects, most notably the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Paix, the largest church ever constructed. Nearby, sacred crocodiles still inhabit the waters by the Presidential Palace.
Further north, Bouaké is the cultural heartland of the Baoulé people. Here, we’ll witness a traditional Goli mask performance, a symbolic ceremony that reflects social order, spirituality, and artistic expression in one setting.
Ivory Coast is a country of contrasts, coastal and inland, modern and traditional, where each stop adds another layer. This trip is thus designed for those looking to understand a lesser-visited part of West Africa with substance and context.
This trip can be combined with our Benin and Togo tour and our Ghana Tour, to unlock more secrets of the West Africa region.
This expedition is offered by Young Pioneer Tours as our first trip into the region. What does that mean? We’ll be learning on the ground. Some things will run perfectly, others maybe less so but that’s the essence of true pioneering travel.
