Did you know that in the Kalash region of Pakistan, there are tribes who are not muslim, and believe in polytheism? Every spring, deep in the valleys of Chitral, the Kalash people throw one of the most unique and vibrant festivals on the planet: Chilam Joshi. This isn’t just a local holiday—it’s a full-on cultural explosion where music, dance, and centuries-old rituals collide in one of Pakistan’s most remote and stunning regions.
The Kalash, an indigenous community with traditions unlike anywhere else in South Asia, they celebrate Chilam Joshi to mark the arrival of spring. Think fertility rites, blessings for crops and livestock, and prayers to their ancient gods—all set against the dramatic backdrop of the Hindu Kush mountains. Expect matchmaking ceremonies, dancing, valley-wide feasts, and a party atmosphere that runs day and night!
This is your chance to witness a festival rarely seen by outsiders, where myth and modern life meet in the most unexpected ways. Join us in the valleys of Bomburet, Birir, and Rumbur as we get front-row access to a tradition that’s as colorful as it is ancient. You’ll eat, dance, and celebrate alongside the Kalash, experiencing firsthand why Chilam Joshi is the heart of their cultural identity.
The tour will begin in Islamabad, the modern and more cosmopolitan city of Pakistan, located in the North-West of the country. From Islamabad, we will drive through the scenic mountain ranges and valleys along the way to the Kalash region near the border with Afghanistan. This includes Swat Valley, Ayun valley in the Hindu-Kush valley, Bomburet valley and of course, Rambur village where we will take part in the Chilam Joshi Festival!
Those who would like to continue the adventure can join our Afghanistan Spring Tour starting May 18!
