What better way to follow up a trip to the Magadan Soviet Gulag than to journey with YPT to Russia’s Jewish Autonomous Oblast (JAO) – Birobidzhan – the Soviet Zion?
Set in Russia’s far east and bordering China’s northeastern province of Heilongjiang, Birobidzhan was set up as an autonomous Oblast for Jewish people by Stalin in order to give the Jewish people of Russia their own homeland, or to get Jewish people as far away from the seat of power, depending on your take on things.
Not too far from the Russia-China border, Birobidzhan is a curious mix of Far East Russia and Yiddish culture. Although most Jews in the area migrated out of the USSR before its collapse, Birobidzhan is home to synagogues, Yiddish schools and cultural centres, and we’ll be journeying to the main Jewish village in the JAO.
After Birobidzhan we take the train to Vladivostok where the tour ends and international flights can be arranged.
This is the first YPT trip to Birobidzhan, and as such is capped strictly at 6 people for a small group atmosphere to make the most out of the JAO. This tour can be joined straight from the Magadan Soviet Gulag tour or as a stand-alone tour.
