Join Young Pioneer Tours as we visit one of the least visited, misunderstood and underrated parts of Indonesia and South East Asia – Banda Aceh and Sabang Island.
This starkly independent region was at war for independence with the central government until the disastrous 2004 Tsunami that wreaked havoc and took the lives of up to 65% of the population. Things though have now morphed into a new reality with the area not only enjoying extreme autonomy, but being the only place within South East Asia to enforce a strict interpretation of Sharia Law. This dark history and complicated present truly make this a land of contradictions and contractions that YPT plan to tackle head first on this trip.
Group | Start Date | End Date | Days | Price |
Group A: Jakarta + Banda Aceh | June 1st | June 7th | 7 days | $995 |
Group B: Banda Aceh only | June 2nd | June 6th | 5 days | $695 |
The tour begins with you either joining us in Jakarta for a few drinks, or directly in Banda Aceh from where we explore the many sites related to the 2004 Tsunami, such as museums, monuments, as well even meeting a survivor of the ordeal. And while we will very much enjoy our time in Banda Aceh proper, we will be observing Sharia Law, without doubt while being observed by the morality police.
It is then that we hit the first major contraction by heading to the beach paradise that is Sabang. Sabang is Indonesia’s most northerly island, with crystal clear waters, coral reefs, and stunning beaches, but also a place that technically at least still falls under Sharia. Things through are somewhat more relaxed here, even if it is slightly more subtle than you might used to in the rest of South East Asia.
Combined we feel this trip offers the perfect blend of moving experiences, dark tourism, political intrigue all of which is set firmly off of the beaten track and in one of the most beautiful locales of the whole region.
Since this is YPT’s first-ever tour to Banda Aceh, we’re running it as a research trip. What does that mean for you? For starters, it comes at a heavily discounted price, a one-time offer before future departures go mainstream. But it also means a tad more unpredictability! This is uncharted territory for us, so there may be detours, surprises, and the occasional hiccup. On the flip side though it also might be some unique opportunities that don’t happen on regular tours. As such we are planning on taking a small group with priority given to existing Pioneers.
The trip is also be offered directly after our wider exploration of the Indonesian Islands and can be combined with our Timor Overland, and West Papua Trekking and Tribes Tour for further discounts.
