Hidden within the heart of Vilnius, capital of Lithuania, lies a captivating gem known as the Republic of Užupis. This bohemian neighborhood embraces art, individuality, and the pursuit of happiness, creating an atmosphere that beckons travellers from all corners of the globe. Užupis is more than just a neighbourhood; it’s an autonomous district that offers a unique experience to visitors seeking a liberating and vibrant cultural escape.

Užupis is a sanctuary for artists, dreamers, and free spirits. Its charming cobbled streets are adorned with vibrant graffiti, sculptures, and murals that reflect the imaginative nature of its inhabitants. As you wander through this whimsical district, you’ll encounter numerous art galleries, studios, and workshops showcasing the flourishing local talent. Užupis is alive with creativity, and it’s not uncommon to stumble upon street performers, musicians, and poets who add an extra touch of magic to the atmosphere.

What sets Užupis apart is its declaration of independence and its own constitution which consists of 41 clauses. Inspired by the ideals of human rights and creative expression, the Constitution of Užupis boldly proclaims the right to be happy, the freedom of art, and the celebration of diversity. The charter which is inscribed on large mirrored rectangles, hangs on a wall along the Avenue of Constitutions.  A visit to Užupis is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a place where these principles are not only embraced but actively encouraged. It serves as a reminder that art and freedom are intertwined, and everyone is invited to become a part of this inclusive community.

One of the notable symbols of Užupis is the picturesque Bridge of Užupis. Stretching across the Vilnia River, this charming bridge acts as the gateway to the district. As you cross it, you’ll be greeted by the famous Užupis Angel statue—a representation of hope and rebirth. Standing on the bridge, you can indulge in breathtaking views of the river, the enchanting buildings, and the cascading waterfalls. This moment encapsulates the enchanting essence of Užupis.

Užupis is adorned with delightful cafes, charming bars, and cozy eateries that embody its artistic spirit. These establishments are not merely places to grab a bite or a drink; they serve as meeting points for locals, artists, and curious travellers alike. Engage in captivating conversations, savour delicious local cuisine, and indulge in some of the finest Lithuanian beers or the famous Užupis honey wine. The ambiance of these places will make you feel like you’re part of something extraordinary.

Throughout the year, Užupis comes alive with communal celebrations. The most renowned event is Užupis Day, celebrated on 1^st April (a tongue-in-cheek April Fools’ Day joke on the declaration of independence for the Republic on 1^st April 1998). Streets are filled with music, art exhibitions, theatrical performances, and a colourful parade that showcases the diversity and creativity of the community. On that day, you could join in the revelry, immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere, and create lasting memories.

While Užupis does not have a traditional Parliament for meetings, it most often take place in a coffee shop called Užupis Café, which is now the Barliament of the Republic! Anyone can seek to become a citizen of the Republic by taking an oath – the only requirement is that all citizens must visit the Republic once. The Republic count among its Honourary Citizens, the Dalai Lama of Tibet, which China angrily accuses Užupis’ decision as political rather than cultural to make the Dalai Lama an honourary citizen.
