The North Field: A Liquid Gold Mine
Every rags-to-riches story needs a catalyst, and for Qatar, that catalyst was gas—specifically, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). In the 1970s, the North Field was discovered off Qatar’s coast. It turned out to be the largest non-associated natural gas field in the world.
While other Gulf states focused on oil, Qatar’s leadership made a massive, risky bet on LNG technology in the 1990s which has, in retrospect, paid off. Today, Qatar has one of the highest GDPs per capita on the planet. This wealth provided the “ammunition” for everything that followed, allowing the state to buy into global markets and build a futuristic skyline that looks like something out of a sci-fi movie.
But gas itself is not enough to sustain Qatar’s rapid regional growth, so the question still remains: how did Qatar become so powerful?
The Al Jazeera Effect
In 1996, the Qatari Emir did something radical: he funded a news network. Al Jazeera was the first independent news channel in the Arab world to offer a platform for debate, dissent, and diverse viewpoints.
Suddenly, this tiny state had a loud voice that reached every corner of the Middle East and beyond. While it made Qatar plenty of enemies, it also made the country impossible to ignore. Al Jazeera effectively put Qatar on the map, proving that in the modern age, information is just as powerful as infantry.
While international journalism partially explains a growth in international voice and assertion in the media field, how did Qatar become so powerful is still only partially answered.
A Friend to Everyone Kind Of Diplomacy
If you want to survive as a small state between giants like Iran and Saudi Arabia, you have to be useful. Qatar’s foreign policy is a masterclass in “hedging.” They host the largest U.S. military base in the region (Al Udeid), yet they maintain a working relationship with Iran. They host a political office for Hamas, but they also mediated the historic Doha Agreement between the U.S. and the Taliban.
By acting as the “Switzerland of the Middle East,” Qatar has become the world’s indispensable mediator. When the West needs to talk to a group they officially don’t “talk” to, they usually book a flight to Doha. This diplomatic agility provides Qatar with a level of security that no amount of tanks could buy.
Soft Power, Sports, and the Shard
You’ve probably seen the Qatar Airways logo on the jerseys of the world’s biggest football clubs, or perhaps you’ve stood under The Shard in London. Both are symbols of Qatar’s massive investment strategy.
By purchasing iconic landmarks (like Harrods) and hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar ensured its name was recognized in every household. While the World Cup brought intense scrutiny regarding labor rights and social laws, it also achieved the ultimate goal of “nation branding”: making Qatar a household name and a top-tier travel destination.
How Did Qatar Become So Powerful and Why It Matters

It’s a country that refused to be a “vassal state” to its larger neighbors, surviving a multi-year blockade (2017–2021) by its Gulf peers and emerging even more self-reliant.
