The Afghanistan Guide
Everyone in the world has heard of Afghanistan. It’s the country that gets mentioned in the news reports in relation to the longest conflict in modern history. What most people don’t know about is that you can travel there, and it is not just the Bora Bora cave complex that Osama Bin Laden was hiding in.
Located in Central/South Asia, Afghanistan is bordered by Pakistan in the South, Iran in the West, China in the East and Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in the North. Afghanistan is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse countries on earth and is a truly surprising destination. From the capital Kabul, to the snowy central mountains, from the deserts to the lakes, its just as geographically diverse.
Since the US-led invasion in 2001, the country has been slowly developing, although it seems to be a case of 2 steps forward, 1 step back, then followed by another 2 steps back, but then 3 steps forward. Territory is either controlled by the Afghan National Government and its NATO/ISAF allies, or the Taliban. The Taliban formed the Afghanistan government prior to 2001, although they were not internationally recognised. In recent years it has become reasonably clear which areas of the country are controlled by whom, although this can change.
