When tourism to Syria resumed in 2017 after years of civil war, Young Pioneer Tours was among the first to take travellers back. Join us for this unique opportunity to experience Nowruz celebrations in Afrin – the heart of north-western Syria.
Nowruz marks the arrival of spring and symbolises renewal and new beginnings. It is the most important festival in the Kurdish calendar. Expect an incredible atmosphere filled with delicious delicacies, fire, music, dancing, and the unique chance to mingle with local Kurdish communities.
Your journey with us begins in Damascus, one of the oldest continuously inhabited capital cities in the world. Here you’ll experience the city’s revived energy with streets lined with cafés, young locals enjoying shisha and coffee while also witnessing the stark realities left behind by years of war, from damaged hospitals and schools to residential neighbourhoods still bearing its scars.
From Damascus we make our way to Aleppo, once known as the ‘Pearl of the Middle East’. Along the way we’ll stop in the historic Christian town of Maaloula where many churches have been carefully restored following damage during the conflict. We’ll also visit Mar Musa Monastery, one of the country’s most fascinating monasteries renowned for its message of interfaith dialogue and coexistence.
In Aleppo you’ll visit sites that most tour groups cannot access, alongside iconic highlights such as the world’s longest souq and a traditional Aleppo soap factory, home to one of the oldest continuous industries in the world. We’ll then head north to Afrin to take part in the evening celebrations of Nowruz well into the evening.
On our way up we’ll have a dedicated stop to Palmyra. Despite its tragic recent history, it is still a breathtaking site. Before your tour concludes in Damascus we’ll visit the very best restaurants and bars the capital has to offer for a farewell celebration with our local guides.
Aside from what we offer, there are multiple chances to meet, eat, drink and converse with Syrians about their everyday lives. You will be very surprised by how direct and open locals are with their views.
