Best Time to Visit Turkey, Istanbul, and Other Turkish Destinations

Find out what to explore in one of the most exotic countries in the world during each season of the year.

Turkey Tour Packages are always appealing. It’s unlikely that you’ll see Turkey’s main attractions in just one trip. There are so many highlights that it would probably take years to visit them all. Starting with the coastline, if you’re traveling in the summer (between June, July, and August), it’s worth extending your stay to enjoy Turkey’s beautiful beaches in addition to its urban centers. The Mediterranean, unlike other times of the year, is heavily enjoyed during this period by Europeans looking to relax on the country’s beaches. You know the sea in Greece? The coastline of Turkey’s Aegean region is just the same—only less known among Americans. The waters are equally crystal blue, thanks to the close proximity between the two countries.

In Istanbul, every season is a major attraction. One of the oldest cities in the world, it deserves to be visited year-round. The city is practically a world of its own and changes significantly from one season to another. The region’s rich history and culture reveal an authentic Turkey that is at the same time modern and endlessly charming.

To make it easier for those who want to understand the weather and choose the best time for their trip to Turkey, here’s an overview of the pros and cons of each season.

During the Winter

(December – January – February and until mid-March)

Winter in Europe takes place during December, January, and February. This is the low season across Europe, and beaches are rarely used due to the cold—similar to winter in parts of the United States. As a result, prices are generally much lower, both for shopping and tourism in the region. Neighborhoods and attractions are also less crowded during this period. Snow can often be found in Turkish cities at this time of year.

For those visiting Cappadocia during winter, it may be more difficult to take a hot air balloon ride due to the extreme cold. However, according to Mesut, our local contact, balloon rides in winter are even more beautiful than in summer, since the landscape is partly covered in white snow while other areas remain vibrantly colorful. Just be prepared—it is extremely cold. During the Turkish winter, accommodations, restaurants, and tours tend to be more affordable because of the lower number of tourists.

During the Summer

(June – July – August)

Unlike the Southern Hemisphere, European summer takes place in June, July, and August. This is high season in Europe and in Turkey. Streets and cities are much more lively, and you’ll encounter visitors from all over the world exploring the country’s beauty. Walking tours are more enjoyable, and the warmer weather invites both locals and tourists to make the most of what the cities offer.

Because it’s high season, hotel, restaurant, and tour prices increase due to the higher number of visitors. It’s also during this period that the Mediterranean Sea displays its clearest shades of blue. Beaches are especially popular among tourists and Europeans in general. Summer in Istanbul and Cappadocia tends to be less crowded compared to Turkey’s coastal cities, as these destinations are more focused on cultural and historical sightseeing, as well as experiencing daily local life.

During Spring and Fall

(Spring: March – April – May | Fall: September – October – November)

During these seasons, the climate and temperatures are especially appealing for travelers interested in cultural tours and visiting the country’s main attractions. However, depending on the month, visitors may encounter mild days and chilly nights. Even so, most hotels offer excellent facilities, so this doesn’t directly affect your stay.

Many people consider these seasons the best time to visit the country, as temperatures are more moderate. The peak of spring is between April and May, and fall is at its best during September and October. For this reason, these months are ideal for those who want to make the most of their trip.

So, which season will you choose?
