Bespoke tours to the Central African Republic (CAR)

Our bespoke tours are created to your desire and specification, therefore not all our tours are listed. Here are some examples of independent tours we can offer, but if there’s anything specific you want, drop us a message.

Dzangha-Sangha National Park

The National Park of Dzanga-Sangha is CAR’s number one destination for nature- lovers. In fact, it might well be one of the most interesting wildlife sites of Africa, albeit a very underrated one. Located by the border of Cameroon and Congo in the southern part of the country, the protected areas of Dzanga Sangha are well renowned for their western lowland gorillas and forest elephants.

The park is administered directly by the WWF and has some very well-organized and clean lodges available for tourists, such as the Doli Lodge. To reach the park, it will be necessary to charter a flight from Bangui, which is not as expensive as it sounds! There is a weekly flight available.

Jungle Treks & Birdwatching

CAR’s dense rainforest is a treasure trove waiting to be explored. Guided jungle treks take you deep into these ecosystems, where you can find exotic birds, rare primates, and a vast plant life. Birdwatchers, in particular, will delight in spotting species found only in this part of Africa. These treks can be tailored for short immersive experiences or extended multi-day expeditions.

Pigmy village tour

While the neighboring country of South Sudan hosts the world’s tallest ethnicity, the Dinkas, CAR is known for having the world’s shortest ethnicity, the Aka or Pygmy peoples. Located in the western and southern forested regions of the country, some of the Pygmy tribes welcome visitors, and it is possible for us to organize visits and stays amongst the people.

Tours of Bangui

For those who are short on time or on a budget, Young Pioneer Tours can organize accommodation and tour guides in Bangui. During this tour, of 1 to 3 days, we will take you around the main sights of the boomtown of CAR. Also, for those on a longer project in Africa necessitating complicated visas, some embassies in CAR offer much easier processes to acquire visas for African countries such as Equatorial Guinea. For any project involving CAR, get in touch with us!

Palace of Emperor Bokassa

Explore the fascinating world of CAR’s most infamous ruler at the Palace of Emperor Bokassa. Built in the 1970s, the palace is a mix of grandeur and eccentricity. Guided tours bring Bokassa’s story to life, highlighting the palace’s unusual architecture, murals, and hidden details.

Multi-country Frontier Journeys

CAR’s strategic location in Central Africa makes it perfect for overland explorers. We can organize multi country expeditions linking CAR with neighboring Congo and Cameroon. These journeys traverse savannahs, forests, and rivers, offering the chance to experience the region’s diverse landscape while tracing historic trade and exploration routes.

Chutes de Boali Waterfalls

Just a short drive from Bangui, the Chutes de Boali is one of CAR’s most spectacular natural landmarks. This series of cascading waterfalls, set amid lush greenery, offers great photography opportunities. Visitors can take in the roar of the falls, enjoy walks along the surrounding trails, and experience the local life in nearby villages

Filming in CAR Tours

Through our media arm Pioneer Media we can make arrangements for productions, journalists, or others to film within CAR, from big-budget projects to guerrilla productions. We can also arrange visas for journalists wishing to do projects.

Yes, we will organise a visa on arrival on your behalf.
To get to the country safely, there are currently two choices. First, you can cross from Cameroon across the Kadei river and do some activities related to the nearby national parks. Secondly, you can fly into the capital, Bangui.
Travel to CAR requires careful planning. While parts of the country can be visited safely with the right precautions, some areas, particularly near certain borders, should be avoided. Our CAR tours are carefully designed to steer clear of these regions. We work closely with trusted local partners and guides to ensure your safety is our top priority, and we always recommend checking your government’s latest travel advice before your trip.
CAR has a tropical climate, with a wet season from May to October and a dry season from November to April. The dry season is generally the best time to visit for more comfortable weather. If you're interested in wildlife, the dry season is also ideal for visiting national parks like Dzanga-Sangha in the southwest, where you can see gorillas and other wildlife.
A yellow fever vaccination is required for entry into CAR, and you may be asked to show proof (Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate) upon arrival. Other recommended vaccinations include typhoid, hepatitis A and B, prophylaxis, and meningitis. Malaria is present, so preventive treatment is advised for travelers. As always, we advice you to consult with your doctor before travelling, they know best.
The official currency of CAR is the Central African CFA franc (XAF). It is used in several other countries in the region as well. It’s advisable to exchange money in advance, as ATMs and exchange services are limited in rural areas.
Bank cards are generally not accepted in CAR, and ATMs are extremely limited outside the capital, Bangui. We recommend bringing cash in USD or EUR to exchange.
Respect for elders and authority figures is important in Central African culture. The majority of people in CAR practice Christianity, with Catholicism being the largest denomination, followed by various Protestant sects. There is also a small Muslim minority. Modesty in clothing is appreciated and recommended, especially in rural areas.
Internet access is available in urban areas, particularly in Bangui, but the quality and reliability can vary. Wi-Fi in hotels and cafes is available but might be slow. You can purchase a local SIM card from one of the local carriers (like Orange or MTN) to have access to mobile data and stay connected.
Public expressions of affection between same-sex partners are criminalized, with possible penalties including imprisonment and fines. LGBTQ+ travellers are advised to be discreet about their sexual orientation and gender identity to reduce risk.
Yes, you can legally drink alcohol in CAR. Alcohol is legal, widely available, and culturally common, especially in cities like Bangui.
