Join YPT for our journey into the very recently war-torn Russian republic of Chechnya and into the very actual conflicted zone of South Ossetia.
Formerly one of the most significant areas of the old Soviet Union in respects of tourism and home to both stunning natural beauty and also the fiercely nationalistic yet extremely friendly Chechen people. It doesn’t get much more adventurous and off the beaten track than this trip.
During our time here, we’ll be crossing mountain ranges, hiking through the countryside of the volatile border area with Georgia, visiting the strange smelling sulphur springs, taking in the majesty of various monuments and of course rounding off our days with evening drinks in the vibrant city of Grozny. From there, we’ll get our own bus to take us right into the middle of the conflict between Georgia and Russia: South Ossetia.
There’s practically no tourist infrastructure in place so our trip starts from the North Ossetian and Russian city of Vladikavkaz, where we transfer to the shady customs at the border and onto Cey village for our first night. We learn a lot from the locals who fought so recently to gain independence from Georgia. We hear their stories as we spend a night in a war veteran home.
Please note that in order for us to have sufficient time to process the South Ossetian visas, bookings for this tour will be closed 3 months before it starts. Make sure to book early to secure your spot!
Please also note that you will need a double-entry Russian visa to take part in this tour as onward travel from South Ossetia into Georgia is nearly impossible and, frankly, ill-advised.
