Come join us for our very special summer tour to Tibet. During this tour we see all the major parts of Lhasa, as well as visiting Lake Namtso, and offering some great top ups, such as a night time trek with nomads, and white water rafting on our last day.

And if all this summer madness was not enough for you, we also offer a weeks extension to North Korea, the week directly following this tour, with the Lhasa – Beijing training you in town the morning of your departure, although meaning almost three days straight on the train, the vast change of landscape and scenery can only be compared with a trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Itinerary

July 29th (Mon)

  • Afternoon flight from Beijing/Xi’an to Lasa
  • Met by your western guide Gareth and your Tibetan guides and transfer to hostel
  • Chance to acclimatize to the high altitude
  • Taken out Lasa old town with your guide to sample the liquid delights and soak up the atmosphere of the old own
  • Overnight in hostel

30th (Tue)

Morning

  • Morning visit to the wondrous site that is the Potala Palace, home to the Dalai Lama’s and simply breathtaking.
  • Visit to Jokhang Temple, the most sacred shrine in TIbet
  • Souvenir shopping in Barkhor Street
  • Lunch at a Nepalise Restaurant in Lasa

Afternoon

  • Free afternoon to explore the old town
  • Dinner at a traditional Tibetan restaurant, and of course eat Yak!
  • For those inclined a night out in Lasa’s new town to hang out with Tibetans in the constantly evolving bar and club scene
  • Overnight at hostel

31st (Wed)
Morning

  • Morning visit to Sera Monastery located 5km north of Lasa, this monastery was the first Gelugpa monastery in Lhasa and has remained the main seat of this major Buddhist order ever since. About 600 monks are now in residence here. There is a fine kora path around the monastery.
  • Visit Norbulingka Palace and Park. Built in 1755 this served as the summer residence of the Dalai Lama up until the last Dalai Lama left in 1959. This is WHO site, and a real treat

Afternoon

  • Lunch in the city
  • Chance to go white water rafting ( at own expense)
  • Dinner in City
  • Overnight in hostel

August 1st (Thurs)
Morning

  • Get up nice and early for the 4 hour drive to Namtso lake, the highest salt water lake in the world!
  • Stop on the way for lunch in the countryside

Afternoon

  • Arrival and dropping off of bags
  • Hike down to the lake where the clear skies join the surface of the lake in the distance creating an amazing view. It is said that “every visitor who has ever been here will find their souls cleansed”, whilst we cannot promise that, we can promise at least a swim!
  • As we will be staying overnight in a tent, it would only be prudent to make sure that we had at least a little camp fire, and some BBQ for dinner, and some Tibetan moonshine!
  • Overnight in tents

2nd (Fri)
Morning

  • Up early for the 4-6 hour dive back to Lhasa
  • Refreshment stop in the way in a small Tibetan village

Afternoon

  • Arrival in Lasa, check into hostel
  • Free afternoon
  • Last night in Lasa, with drinks in the old town with our Tibetan guides. On the last night we like to buy dinner for our guides, and let them tell us about their Tibet

3rd (Sat)
Morning

  • Last chance to buy souvenirs in the old town

Afternoon

  • Board the wonderful “sky train”, at 13.30 for the 42 hour trip to Beijing, where fresh oxygen is pumped through the carriage for the 36 hour trip to Xi’an, or 48 hour trip to Beijing. This is truly one of the most amazing train journeys in the world, with most of the great sites coming during day time hours

4th (Sun)

  • Arrival in Xi’an

5th (Mon)

  • Arrival in Beijing (06.30) group will be able to drop their bags at a hostel near the train station, and relax before getting ready for the DPRK part of the trip!

DPRK Extension

Monday 5th August

  • Meet your YPT guide at 2pm on the 3rd floor of the Beijing City Central Hostel to go through the itinerary, receive visas and tickets etc. (Go past front desk and take the lift to the 3rd floor and go left to the bar area).
  • Train takers depart Beijing Central station at 17.25pm for the 24 hour sleeper ride to Pyongyang.

6th (Tues)

  • Train group arrive at Dandong at 7am for Chinese border control then depart for Sinuijiu at 10 am for the same on the DPRK side.
  • Flight takers depart Beijing Airport Terminal 2 on Air Koryo at 12.55 pm (Check in at counters C11-C15).
  • Flight group arrive in Pyongyang at 16.00 to a warm welcome from your Korean guides.
  • Train group arrive at 19.30 to an equally warm welcome.
  • Dinner and overnight at the Yanggakdo Hotel.

7th (Wed)

Morning

  • Walk through Mansudae fountain park and see the mosaic pictures of President Kim Il Sung and the leader Kim Jong Il.
  • Visit Mansudae Grand Monument to show our respects to the President Kim Il Sung and the Leader Kim Jong Il. (Optional extra- you can present flowers if you wish: small bunches are 2 euro, larger ones 4).
  • Revolutionary Martyr’s Cemetery- The resting place of the greatest of the anti-Japanese revolutionary fighters each grave features a bronze bust of the hero laid to rest within.
  • Juche Tower- Monument to the everlasting Juche Ideology (optional 5 euro to go to the top).
  • Foreign Language Bookshop- with a large selection of books in English and other European Languages as well as other souvenirs followed by a short walk to:
  • Kim Il Sung Square the central square of Pyongyang city and the place where all the action happens.

Afternoon

  • Lunch in a local Hot Pot restaurant.
  • Pyongyang Metro- ride 5 stops on the famous Pyongyang Underground!
  • Exiting at the Arch of Triumph- the largest Victory Arch in the world, built to celebrate the triumphant return of Kim Il Sung after the Anti-Japanese war.
  • Korean War Museum- Let the expert local guide show you around the enormous museum featuring dioramas, locally used weapons, tanks etc, and captured American equipment!
  • Korean war Monument
  • USS Pueblo- The only US Naval Ship still held captive by another nation.
  • Dinner at the Famous Lamb BBQ restaurant with performance!
  • Kaeson Youth Park (Entry is included, rides are extra charge)
  • Overnight at the Yanggakdo hotel.

8th (Thurs)

Morning

  • Kumsusan Palace of the Sun- The mausoleum for the Great Leader President Kim Il Sung and the Dear Leader Kim Jong Il.
  • Military Hardware Exhibition hall- The showcase exhibition of the DPRK’s military hardware.
  • Party Foundation Monument.

Afternoon

  • Lunch at the Gold Cup Restaurant.
  • Grand People’s study House- Library and academic centre for adult learners, this grand building is built in the Korean style and affords a great view over the central Square.
  • Meari shooting range- Your chance to fire a gun in the DPRK, on military foundation day no less!
  • Mangyongdae Schoolchildren’s palace- The largest of the schoolchildren’s palaces (extracurricular centres) in the DPRK, we’ll first observe some lessons then watch the amazing performance.
  • Drive to Kaesong City.
  • Dinner and overnight at the Kaesong Folklore hotel.

9th (Fri)

Morning

  • Panmunjon DMZ Village- see the DMZ and the treaty and conferences rooms where the armstice was signed all in the company of a friendly KPA officer guide (You can also take pictures of soldiers here!)
  • Koryo Museum- the oldest university in Korea and now a converted museum of local history. Also the site of the best propaganda and stamp/postcard shop in the DPRK!

Afternoon

  • Lunch at the Thongil Restaurant in Kaesong City- try your hand at traditional Korean Pansangi- a series of dishes served in bronze bowls. (Optional extras- Dog soup 5 euro, Ginseng Stuffed Whole Chicken 30 euro- can be split between several).
  • Tomb of King Kongmin- the only original tomb of it’s kind still standing in the DPRK.
  • Drop by Sariwon City (Capital of North Hwanghae province) to walk in the local folkcustom park and view the city from the mountain top pagoda.
  • Photo opportunity of the Monument to the Three Charters of National Reunification, standing over the Thongil Highway.
  • Dinner at a the Yanggakdo hotel.
  • Taedonggan Diplomats Club- The only place (excluding hotels and their car parks) where you can party into the small hours.
  • Overnight at the Yanggakdo hotel.

10th (Sat)

Group 1 Depart:

  • Flight members depart at 09.00 am for Beijing on Air Koryo. (Arriving at 09.55 am Beijing time).
  • Train members depart at 10.10 am for Beijing on train K28. (Arriving at 09.00am on Sunday the 11th).

Morning

  • Drive to Nampho City.
  • Chollima Steel Complex- One of the DPRK’s most famous industrial sites- named after the Chollima movement it helped lead.
  • Taean Heavy Machine Complex- One of the most important factories for the DPRK’s industry, producing among other things most of the turbines used for electricity generation. Also features a museum about the factory.

Afternoon

  • Lunch at the Hangu harbour hotel in Nampo City.
  • Taean Glass Friendship Factory- A JV operation between China and the DPRK.
  • Kangso Mineral water factory- Home to the DPRK’s most famous sparkling water- with samples!
  • Nampo Orphanage- If you wish you can bring some infant formula for the infants here, they will really appreciate the donation.
  • Dinner and Overnight at the Ryonggang hot spa hotel- with a mineral spa in each room!

11th (Sun)

Morning

  • West Sea Barrage- An astounding example of socialist construction the barrage was built to keep the salty water of the West sea from rendering parts of the Taedonggan river and surrounding farmland useless as well as to tame the local sea.
  • Chongsan Co-operative farm- One of the top co-op farms in the DPRK and a model of the co-op method.
  • Nampo beach- for swimming and beach football with the locals!

Afternoon

  • Picnic Lunch at the beach then back to Pyongyang.
  • Korean Film Studio- The best and biggest film studio in the DPRK. Street Walk along the Taedong River.
  • Dinner at the Pyongyang Pizza Restaurant. (extra charge usually 7-10 euro each)
  • Rakwon Microbrewery- home of some of the cheapest draft pints in Pyongyang (.5 euro each!)
  • Overnight at the Yanggakdo hotel.

12th (Mon) Group 2 Depart:

  • Flight members depart at 5.20 pm for Beijing on Air China. (Arriving at 06.05pm Beijing time).
  • Train members depart at 10.10 am for Beijing on train K28. (Arriving at 09.00am on Tuesday the 13th).
