ITINERARY INFORMATION

Join YPT for the second part of our All Koreas tour: North Korea Extreme North East & Rason tour- and the most insightful tour ever into the DPRK. In November 2012, YPT became the first westerners to cross the Tumen border in Namyang, into the extreme North-East of the DPRK. This is still one of the least travelled and least seen routes in the DPRK, and provides a unique look at life in the country.

Our trip starts you off either in Beijing, or by flying up from Pyongyang on our All Koreas Part 1 tour, or meeting the group when they arrive directly in Tumen. From there, we’ll cross on foot over the bridge into the DPRK and Namyang, where your extreme DPRK experience starts with a bang. This can be considered the most intense border crossing in the country, with every piece of paper that you own, and all your electronics and bags being given the most thorough going-over you are ever likely to receive in any border! It might sound scary, but the intensity makes for quite the experience.

We are then met by our extremely friendly guides and driven to Hoeryong, a city only just opened to western tourists, and hometown of not only the most beautiful women in the country (according to the Koreans), but also Mother Kim Jong Suk (Kim Jong Il’s Mother). We’ll check out the Wangjaesan Monument in Onsong, one of the most impressive monuments in the country, before heading on to the infamous Chongjin and the scenically beautiful Mt Chilbo, where we’ll indulge in the only home-stay available in the country. This is an extremely unique and interesting experience, and you’ll spend your day and night drinking, eating, and playing sports with the Korean families will be absolutely unforgettable. Two tourists will be paired up to stay with each family in the village.

Finally, we’ll leisurely head to Rason (Special Economic Zone of the DPRK) stopping off at Gyongsong County and Chongjin for more fun on the way, before visiting the only part of the DPRK where tourists can exchange currency into won at “street rates”, and spend it in shops and even at the newly-renovated and only private market tourists can visit in the entire country. Throw in some great local drinking spots and the Emperor Hotel’s fabulous show and you’ve got a fantastic finish to a tour that really shows you a different side of the DPRK.

The tour ends in Yanji City, Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, the area with the largest Korean-Chinese population in China.

You may join this North Korea Extreme North East & Rason tour as a stand-alone tour, or you can combine other parts of our All Koreas tour to not only save on cash, but also gain more experience on what the DPRK has to offer.
