About Rason

Rason is the combined name of the Rajin-Sonbong Special Economic Zone of Kwanbuk County North-Eastern DPRK, bordering both Russia, and China, from 1993-2004 Rason was a directly governed, “special city” from 2004-2009 it lost this status, but from last year it is back in the Special City category.

So what exactly does this mean? Well it means that Rason is treated a little bit differently from the North Korean “mainland”, with different rules on things such as holding of foreign currency, visa free entry, and many opportunities for joint-ventures and foreign investment. It has often been compared to China’s special economic zones such as Shenzhen when they first opened up, and while it is different, and more uniquely Korean, it certainly makes this very interesting place to visit.
